One byte out of the big apple

FullHD_StephanieNikolopoulos_profilepic.jpg - few seconds ago

New York City attracts captains of industry, innovators and creatives. It’s home to iconic skyscrapers and intricate subway tunnels, the neon lights of Times Square and the delicate flora of Central Park, physical stores and dotcoms – and they’re all brought to life by manufacturing.

Join Stephanie Nikolopoulos, Editor-in-Chief of Thomas Insights, as she takes a ‘byte’ of the history and future of the Big Apple in this monthly column.

What sold me on the first apartment I rented in New York City was its proximity to one of the New York Public Library branches. I spent hours there losing myself among the batteries. Each book was like an oyster: opening the well-worn cover revealed a magnificent and mysterious gem.

Some days I would walk up the stairs to the second floor of my neighborhood library and sit down at one of the sturdy wooden tables. For a while I had read, randomly opening one of my favorite novels on any page, just to soak up the language, the flow of words on the page, the long, rambling sentences that stirred my imagination. And then I took out my notebook and pen from my tote bag and started to write …

The library’s anniversary is approaching this month

Despite being one of the most famous libraries in the world – so iconic that it has been featured in countless Hollywood movies, TV shows, and books – when it was founded on May 27, 1895, the New York Public Library (NYPL) was by no means the first library open to the public in New York. This distinction goes to the New York Society Library, which began operating in a room in Old Town Hall in 1754 (it has since moved to the Upper East Side).

Perhaps the administrators took the idea of ”deep learning” a little too literally because the area chosen for the library was the location of the Lower Town Reservoir, part of the Croton Distribution Reservoir. which served the city with water. Reservoir Square was renamed Bryant Park after William Cullen Bryant, abolitionist and editor of the New York Evening Post in 1884, but the reservoir on the east side of the park was not removed until the summer of 1899 – after plans for the library were already underway.

It took 500 workers to remove the tank. If you know where to look – in the lower South Court stairwell – you can still see the remains of the tank walls hidden in the library. The real reason the site was chosen, however, was because of its proximity to the Astor Library and the Lenox Library.

The competition brings out the best in design, so the architects, John Merven Carrère and Thomas Hastings, were selected on November 11, 1897. For years, as the building was constructed, people have speculated on the wonders they would admire once the library opened. . President Taft dedicated the building – the tallest marble building in all of the United States at the time – on May 23, 1911.

From the impressive ceiling of the Rose Main Reading Room to the majestic lions in the library out front, there is much to be said for the splendor of the New York Public Library. But the part of the library that seemed to arouse fascination even before it opened – and which to this day remains mind-boggling – are the piles of books.

“The largest library in the world”

While the New York Public Library was still under construction, Sunday New York Times The magazine published an article on October 1, 1905, calling it “without exception the largest library in the world.” The article, titled “The Great New York Public Library Nears Completion; A huge library to hold 4,500,000 volumes — will open in three years — will cost $ 3,000,000 — why it was delayed, ”paid special attention to the engineering and design of the batteries. the library.

“This wonderful network of steel bars and studs has just been completed, and illustrates the very latest methods and devices for shelving books. There is nothing like it in the big Old World libraries, ”the article read. to say: “A bookcase containing three and a half million volumes means a series of shelves which, if laid together, end to end, would measure more than eighty kilometers.”

The library measures 390 feet by 270 feet. Each floor has been made to its own height to accommodate the piles of books.

To design and build the stacks of books, the bones of the institution, the library turned to Snead & Company Iron Works. Earlier known for its window frames, the metalworking company became an expert in metal shelving from 1890. With their “z” notch that allowed for custom shelf height, Snead book stacks were narrow, sturdy and beautifully designed.

Thanks to the meticulous maintenance of the Snead & Company Iron Works archives, we have detailed information on the construction of the New York Public Library piles via their book Library planning, bookcases and shelves.

The rear of the building houses the main stack of books. Running from the basement to the second floor, it measures 297 feet long by 79 feet wide. It has seven levels of 7 feet 6 inches, which are then divided and subdivided: “Throughout the main stack contains 95,000 adjustable and 6,000 fixed shelves, which, placed end to end, would extend a distance of 63.3. miles.

The main stack alone could hold 3,000,000 pounds. However, keep in mind that this is the main stack, not the main stack. only stack. The other stacks can hold an additional 500,000 volumes.

Like an ant tunnel under the library

Today, the library holds around 4 million books in its underground piles. There are 88 miles of shelves in the Humanities and Social Sciences Library and 37 miles in the Milstein Research Stacks.

Milstein’s Upper Part opened in 1991 – and by “upper part” we of course mean 17 feet below Bryant Park. For years, this was the only accessible part. When funding was tight, the library considered storing its overflow of books in New Jersey, but New Yorkers being New Yorkers fought back.

Thanks to a donation from the Milsteins, the lower level, 27 feet below the park, was finally completed and became accessible in 2016. The air-conditioned space opened with 55,600 square feet of storage and can hold 2,500,000 books. Yet there is such an abundance of books that librarians have had to throw away the Dewey decimal system – gasp! – and simply store them by size. (Get a look at what the stacks look like under Bryant Park here.)

The Milstein Research Stacks rely on 24 electric cars to transport the books to the circulation counters in the main building. As part of the $ 2.6 million project, design company Gensler created the train system and Teledynamic built it. There is a whopping 950 feet of track for this little pound train, and, operating at speeds of up to 75 feet per minute and able to turn 90 degrees to climb the wall, the car can go from Milstein to the Rose Reading Room. in just 5 minutes! (Watch them in action here.)

Battery facts

On the day the library opened, the very first book requested from the main stack turned out to be a publicity stunt! The visitor to the library had asked Shakespeare’s play philosophy unveiled by Delia Bacon – and the library staff had to admit they didn’t have a copy. Half a century later, it was all revealed that all of this had been a boost in bringing attention to the book.

This led to Nikolai I. Grot’s Nravstvennye ideally nashego vremeni (Moral Ideas of Our Time: Friedrich Nietzsche and Leo Tolstoy) becoming the first book extracted from the main piles.

Today, more than 16 million people use the New York Public Library each year.

The busiest day on record was December 30, 1929, when 8,939 titles were requested in the main reading room.

So, of all these books, which one is the most sought after? Last year it was revealed that Ezra Jack Keats’ Snow day has been checked out from the New York Public Library 485,583 times, which is more than any other title. The Caldecott Medal-winning children’s book was published in 1962. The best book for adults was the novel by George Orwell. 1984, which, at the time, had been borrowed 441,770 times. Dale Carnegie is highly touted How to win friends and influence people was the most verified non-fiction (284,524 times).

Virtual library

We are now living in an age where a book does not necessarily mean a physical object.

The New York Public Library now offers 300,000 ebooks and audiobooks. However, just like hard copies, readers must use their library card to view them from the library’s free and open source app, SimplyE, and there may even be a waiting list.

Wonderful and weird artifacts beyond the books

Today, the library contains over 56 million items – and not all of them are books. Some are adjacent books, magazines for example, while others could be categorized as scary:

Donald Trump’s Social Media is a WordPress blog – Facebook, Twitter Ban Still Active http://therapidweavershow.com/donald-trumps-social-media-is-a-wordpress-blog-facebook-twitter-ban-still-active/ http://therapidweavershow.com/donald-trumps-social-media-is-a-wordpress-blog-facebook-twitter-ban-still-active/#respond Wed, 05 May 2021 00:12:00 +0000 http://therapidweavershow.com/donald-trumps-social-media-is-a-wordpress-blog-facebook-twitter-ban-still-active/

Former President Donald J. Trump recently launched the promised social media platform for anyone who has been banned or removed from Facebook or Twitter, and it turned out to be a WordPress blog site. Trump is now a blogger, but still faces a ruthless ban on major US and world social media platforms as he was dismantled.

While there are huge disputes in the courts to create a board of directors or a division within the US government to control social media, the current moderation still gives these companies the right and power to misrepresent who. whether it be. Currently, Facebook is on the verge of settling the various disputes it faces, including an antitrust hearing for its case.

Content moderation is still of utmost importance for social media and brings discipline to everyone who uses the platform.

Former President Trump was removed from office and banned from Facebook and Twitter for his alleged disinformation during his stint on the platform, which was later discussed after his tenure as President of the United States. However, this is not a problem for the businessman, as Trump has promised that a social media platform will arrive for all banned posters like him.

Several months after the statements and claims, Trump is back with a platform to speak out via the WordPress blog. This is the site called “From Donald J. Trump’s officeThe ‘social media’ platform, aka blog, is said to have features like popular social networking sites like Twitter, which has a similar button (which is not working at the time of writing).

Facebook, Twitter vs. Trump’s WordPress blog

While there is nothing wrong with people starting a WordPress blog, especially the old-fashioned former president, the various features he boasts are in direct competition with massive platforms. Facebook and Twitter have been developed for years by different staff and IT experts, spending hours of coding to provide its different functionality.

However, in Trump’s social media blog these features are non-existent, yet they do look like a Twitter timeline of post positioning and scrolling. Different supporters of this blog can subscribe to newsletter alerts by email and phone numbers (like following on social media), and share the content on Facebook.

Can Trump’s Blog Be Considered Social Media?

While blogging sites are primarily viewed as a social network, it’s safe to say that it’s not a full-fledged social media outlet, as Trump promised months ago. Blogs have been there to be the vehicle for people’s thoughts and feelings, but they lack the interaction and other elements to be called “social media”.

It’s time for WordPress theme authors to step up their block template game – WordPress Tavern http://therapidweavershow.com/its-time-for-wordpress-theme-authors-to-step-up-their-block-template-game-wordpress-tavern/ http://therapidweavershow.com/its-time-for-wordpress-theme-authors-to-step-up-their-block-template-game-wordpress-tavern/#respond Tue, 04 May 2021 23:08:02 +0000 http://therapidweavershow.com/its-time-for-wordpress-theme-authors-to-step-up-their-block-template-game-wordpress-tavern/

Going through my routine this week, I went through the latest versions of WordPress themes and found a new project that supports the block editor. He even shipped a few custom models. While the design was nothing fancy, it was a solid theme overall. However, after spending most of the day writing about it, I didn’t think I could move forward with the story. Something was bothering me.

It was the same that I have felt with several others lately. There have been too many missed opportunities. The theme had the foundation, the underlying potential, to be more than it was.

The theme had a commercial “pro” version that users could purchase. Almost all of the pro features, however, relied on old-school upselling tactics of additional theme options. The only exception was a block-related feature that will be free as part of the Global Styles component likely to ship with WordPress later this year.

Where were the custom block styles? Where could a user find unique designs? Additional navigation menus, sidebars, color settings and typography options are becoming less and less of added value for end users. It’s probably safe money right now, and I can take the comfort of not taking too many risks.

Theme authors need to start shifting gears. Upsells should come in the form of features that will not be available on the WordPress stock. Right now that means creating unique block designs and styles.

Explore model ideas

Over the past month I have been tinkering with custom models. While I was in the design and development industry for over a decade, what I was able to accomplish with the Block Editor alone – no custom code – and a full block-ready theme, this it’s just scratching the surface. We have much better talent in the WordPress community, and I want to see their art run wild.

It all started with the WP Tavern Jukebox podcast – you should check out Episodes # 1 and # 2 if you haven’t heard them already. Nathan Wrigley, the new host, pushed me enough to get back on design and development to implement some of the features he needed. Over the years, I haven’t worked much with podcasting or any other type of audio. It was new territory for me. Ultimately, the podcast inspired me to think about audio models.

What is possible with the WordPress editor today?

I scoured the web for various layouts, looking for modern audio presentations. Many concepts were impossible for an end user to implement from the editor alone. They would need custom block styles extended from the themes themselves. And, there were several designs that I just didn’t think could be done, but these usually had plugin-territory elements.

However, I found some ideas that I could run around with and create my own. I started with a simple audio file from The Martian soundtrack – I had watched the movie the night before and was on a David Bowie kick.

Unique audio pattern of the soundtrack.

It was simple. Just add Group, Columns, Image, Paragraph, Header, Audio, and Social Icons blocks. I was satisfied with the result and some of my Twitter followers responded positively.

Inspired by the medium, I created an alternate layout. It was even easier by adding Cover, Paragraph, Header, Audio, and Social Icons blocks.

Audio integration pattern nested in a Cover block.

Based on the original model, I built one that used SoundCloud integration instead of the Audio block. I also created another one with a few edits that were aimed more at podcasters.

As I delved into this project, the more I became able to create layouts. I started to understand what some of the limitations were and to pull everything around them.

One of the most problematic areas of the editor is that it does not pass enough spacing control. Therefore, I had to use the Spacer block liberally, something I prefer not to use as it relies on pixel units and puts an extra charge <div> in the markup. To build some models I had to get a little less purist and just use the tools available.

This change in mentality has opened up other possibilities. I have built a few other audio related block models. They were, again, simple layouts, but I wanted to make them visually stand out with images that end users could add. The goal is to give users one-click access to pre-designed sections, starting points where people can show their own creativity.

The next step was to start thinking beyond the audio models. There is so much more that others can do in this space. I wanted to venture a little more.

Since then I have built several other templates like the following news article header that I would like to use on the tavern in the future:

Design with a cover block, article title on the left and data points on the right.
News or data-driven article header template.

I could share more concepts, but this seems like a great place to stop. The goal is not to showcase my portfolio of patterns. This is to inspire our theme design community in the hope that they will build something much better. I also wanted to show how easy it was to bring up a few patterns. Instead of hours of development, many ideas have been reduced to minutes. This is the power that the block system provides today.

When I wrote about the Block System Creating Business Opportunities for Theme Authors in January, it was a theoretical post. It’s a follow-up that puts it a bit more into practice (without the actual sale, of course).

Imagine, as a thematic company, you create a freemium theme for musicians. You might want to include a few basic templates for users to choose from. However, there are an endless number of alternatives that you can offer as part of a pro package.

I’m sure there is already a theme author / company out there right now with a versatile theme concept in mind that will eventually have hundreds of designs. I can only hope that they have a strong categorization system or that they offer separate packages or imports.

The block template directory is expected to land alongside WordPress 5.8. At first, it will be mostly basic models. However, others will be encouraged to contribute over time. It’s a welcome feature for the platform, but it’s never going to be a perfect match for every theme design. Each theme has its own design nuances. Everyone has different methods of solving problems.

The best templates will come from the theme authors themselves, especially when combined with custom block styles, packaged, and marketed as part of their theme’s experience. Developers can wait for the whole market to catch up or get ahead of the curve.

Norway’s plug-in electric vehicles take over 80% share in April http://therapidweavershow.com/norways-plug-in-electric-vehicles-take-over-80-share-in-april/ http://therapidweavershow.com/norways-plug-in-electric-vehicles-take-over-80-share-in-april/#respond Tue, 04 May 2021 21:58:35 +0000 http://therapidweavershow.com/norways-plug-in-electric-vehicles-take-over-80-share-in-april/

In April 2021, plug-in electric vehicles took an 80.1% market share in Norway, up from 69.6% in April 2020. The overall automobile volume has returned to seasonal norms, with 13,166 vehicles registered. The most recently sold all-electric vehicle, the Audi e-tron, is now on the verge of being overtaken by the new Volkswagen ID. 4.

April’s combined plugins result of 80.1% consisted of 54.9% Electric Battery (BEV) and 25.2% Plugin Hybrid (PHEV). The cumulative share of plugins for 2021 now stands at 81.5%, with BEVs dominating at 53.3%.

The share of the combustion-only powertrain for 2021 since the start of the year now stands at just 11.5%, a significant drop from the cumulative share of 20.3% a year ago, and will likely fall. below 10% for the whole of 2021:

The best-selling BEVs

With some brands delivering irregular monthly shipments, let’s go back and see which BEV models are most popular in Norway. year to date.

The Audi e-tron, with just under 800 deliveries added in April, still barely holds the top spot it has held for about a year. Now, however, its younger brother from the VW Group, the Volkswagen ID.4, is gaining volume much faster and is about to pass. With its first serious volume delivered in April, adding 1,802 units, the ID.4 seems to tend to inevitably take the lead since the start of the year by the end of next month:

The Tesla Model 3 was in a shipping trough in April, at just 7 units, compared to last month’s high tide surge of 2,169 units. Smoothing out those bumps, since the start of the year, the Model 3 is still neck and neck with the Audi e-tron, but will only see the rear of the Volkswagen ID.4 from now on, though the latter can maintain its recent healthy volumes. .

Volkswagen ID. 4. Image courtesy of Volkswagen.

The brother of the ID.4, the Skoda ENYAQ, also based on the new VW MEB platform, is just starting to ship in Norway. It saw 334 initial units in April, already almost enough (prorated) to reach the top 10, and will grow from there. Expect it to be visible on the cumulative Top 10 list later this year.

The crossovers based on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform don’t stop there, however. The Audi Q4 e-tron (image below) is expected to start Norwegian deliveries in June. The new Audi takes the best luxury features of the current Audi e-tron, combined with the design, space and efficiency of the VW MEB platform, and offers them at a competitive price. In other words, it takes the best elements of Norway’s two best sellers, the e-tron and the ID.4, and combines them in a way that might just turn out to be the sweet spot for many consumers. Norwegian.

Overall, the VW MEB platform model team is expected to dominate in Norway this year. This is now clarified by Elon Musk, claiming that Tesla will only have limited European production of the Tesla Model Y from the Berlin Gigafactory production facility in 2021, a crossover that will undoubtedly be popular in Scandinavia (and elsewhere. in Europe) when it finally arrives. However, 2022 should see a good race between all of these compelling BEVs, which together will shut down the few remaining combustion vehicle sales in Norway.

What is the progress of the Norwegian car fleet?

In my last report on Norway, some commentators asked what the composition of the Norwegian vehicle fleet now looks like. With a plugin share of New Vehicle sales solidly above 80%, the fleet is obviously turning slowly but steadily for good. Turnover takes a long time, as vehicles can last for more than 15 years of use (or much longer in some cases), but the recovery in the turnover rate in Norway is just starting to be visible, especially if we press the X axis to accentuate the trend lines:

Note the slight increase in plugin slopes (green lines) in 2020, when Norway’s share of plugins in new sales was almost 75%. Over the next year or two, when new sales will almost grow entirely plugins, the fleet replacement rate will obviously accelerate a little further, and be more visible.

In a normal year for auto sales volume, sales of 100% plugins should approach a fleet replacement rate of 6% or 7% in Norway. It means, all other things being equal, around 50% of the Norwegian vehicle fleet will be plug-in by 2025 and around 80% by 2030.

But, as the operating costs of BEVs (fuel efficiency, longevity and low maintenance costs) improve even further, and fossil fuel vehicles face potentially higher disincentives to use (fuel tax). higher, annual taxes, road tolls, city center bans, etc.), the replacement rate may be higher than normal (i.e. other things may not be equal).

Norway. Photo by Damir Spanic on Unsplash.

It should also be remembered that newer vehicles are generally much more driven than older vehicles, so the kilometers traveled in the fleet will transform even more quickly into electrical energy. Essentially, by 2030, the Norwegian passenger vehicle fleet can be expected to use only on the order of 10-20% of the fossil fuels that vehicles burned before the EV transition (and is heading rapidly towards almost zero).

With compelling new BEV models to come, the plugins market share in Norway is expected to grow from 75% last year to over 85% in 2021, possibly even reaching 90%. What do you think? Please let us know in the comments.

The shADe anti-greenwashing plugin blocks unsustainable brands http://therapidweavershow.com/the-shade-anti-greenwashing-plugin-blocks-unsustainable-brands/ http://therapidweavershow.com/the-shade-anti-greenwashing-plugin-blocks-unsustainable-brands/#respond Tue, 04 May 2021 10:00:06 +0000 http://therapidweavershow.com/the-shade-anti-greenwashing-plugin-blocks-unsustainable-brands/

After H&M launched its ‘conscious collection’ of ‘sustainable’ clothing – which was later referred to as greenwashing – students at Imperial College London and the Royal College of Art had an idea: what if when you shop for clothes online, all unsustainable businesses were automatically blocked? They created a web plugin to do just that.

Their AI-powered plugin called shADe blocks digital marketing from companies with low sustainability scores and instead suggests items from brands that have the data to back up their environmental claims.

“We hope that the fast fashion brands will recognize that if we can make consumers very aware of their digital marketing strategy and it really works [consumers] far from them, they will have to change what they are doing, ”says Fatimah El-Rashid, one of the founders of shADe. The plugin is the student category winner of Fast Companyof World Changing Ideas Award 2021.

After this deceptive marketing from H&M, El-Rashid says, “We thought, ‘This is an opportunity for us to be able to design something that enables consumers themselves to make responsible choices.” To get a brand’s sustainability scores, shADe works with Good On You, which collects 500 data points from fashion brands in three main categories: people, which includes issues such as living wages and worker safety. workers; planet, which covers sustainability practices from resource use to microfiber pollution; and animals, which includes a brand’s animal welfare policies.

When shopping in a marketplace like ASOS, when you scroll through clothes of different brands, shADe blocks items that get low Good On You ratings. Orange and red faces with x’s over the eyes accompany bad choices; yellow smiley faces appear next to top performing products. The plugin also allows buyers to click through and get more information about what a brand review means.

The team expects a beta to be available soon and hope that shADe can raise awareness of unsustainable fast fashion practices and make brands understand that people care about their environmental impact. “All we’re doing is providing them with a tool that makes it easier for them to choose,” says El-Rashid, “and I think that because of that, companies will have to take more responsibility.”

A story of the Pont family in Boca Grande http://therapidweavershow.com/a-story-of-the-pont-family-in-boca-grande/ http://therapidweavershow.com/a-story-of-the-pont-family-in-boca-grande/#respond Tue, 04 May 2021 05:41:23 +0000 http://therapidweavershow.com/a-story-of-the-pont-family-in-boca-grande/

BY KAREN GRACE AND THE HISTORIC CENTER OF BOCA GRANDE – The start of the du Pont family in Boca Grande took place in 1916 or 1917 when Louise (du Pont) and Frank Crowninshield rented the cottage from Frank’s brother (Benjamin) on the gulf. In the years that followed, Louise and Frank bought land on First Street and Gulf Boulevard, the street that once stood in front of today’s waterfront homes, but has since eroded. Eventually, they expanded their property to include six cabins as well as a main house and a stable.

Ms. Crowninshield has become a benefactor of many Island institutions and individuals. She provided ownership of the island’s school, now the community center, and raised funds to equip a school for black families at a time when schools were separate. She supported the presence of a doctor on the island and ultimately the creation of the Boca Grande health clinic.

Henry Francis and Ruth du Pont and daughters, Pauline and Ruth

Many children on the island report swimming in the Crowninshield pool, having tea with Louise, attending picnics and receiving her support for their higher education. Davis Hammond, a descendant of Crowninshield, remembers arriving on the train for a vacation on the island and how his great-aunt Louise organized their entertainment.

Louise’s brother, Henry Francis du Pont, and his wife Ruth Wales du Pont built a house in the 1920s, as did Hugh Rodney Sharp and his wife Isabelle Mathieu du Pont Sharp (his father was Henry Francis’ second cousin and Louise) who built the Hacienda, the estate behind the white wall of Sixth Street and Gasparilla Road. Later, George Weymouth and his wife, Deo du Pont Weymouth, came to Boca Grande. Deo’s father was also the second cousin of Henry Francis and Louise.

Henry Francis du Pont’s family included his daughters, Pauline Louise du Pont Harrison and Ruth Ellen du Pont Lord, both of whom had homes on Gilchrist. Henry Francis was known as a collector and a horticulturist / gentleman farmer. Her daughter, Ruth, wrote in her book about her father that Henry Francis was “always ready to investigate the progressive and the new. In gardening and agriculture, he was “an innovator and a leader”. He cultivated rare plants and experimented with the multiplication of plants. His bold decisions revolutionized farming and dairy production practices. He was also the founder of the Winterthur Museum, Gardens and Library in Delaware.

Ruth Lord herself was also an innovator, earning an undergraduate degree at Vassar where she was a valedictorian and her Masters in Education at Yale in a time when wealthy women did not often attend college. In addition to writing a book about her father, she has also co-authored a book, “When Home is No Haven,” based on her work at the Yale Child Study Center, where she focused on child care issues. children. She was also the co-founder of the Long Wharf Theater in New Haven.

The Sharp family had a major impact on Boca Grande. Hugh Rodney Sharp Sr., known as Rodney, was “a frustrated architect” according to his son Bayard, who thought the Spanish style suited the island.

Like Henry Francis du Pont, Rodney was particularly interested in gardens, both in Delaware and Boca Grande. The gardens of the Hacienda are covered in the book “The Golden Age of American Gardens (1890-1940)”. The Hugh Sharp Jr. family continues to own and reside at the Hacienda.

The Sharp sons, Hugh and Bayard, and a group of investors purchased the Gasparilla Inn in 1961 and Bayard’s descendants continue to own the inn. Bayard was also an integral part of the development of the Gasparilla Island Conservation and Improvement Association and the enactment of the Gasparilla Island Act in 1979.

That same year, Bayard bought the pink elephant. Hugh and Bayard attended the Boca Grande health clinic and then traded riparian land for the railway right-of-way and donated the latter property to the community for today’s bike path.

Deo from Weymouth Bridge

Another cousin of the Bridge, Dulcinea (Deo) of Weymouth Bridge, has contributed to the history of the island by overseeing the operations of the San Marco Theater which has shown first-run films in support of the Clinic and by painting the Temptation murals. There she depicted the island as she knew it in the 1940s and 1950s, painting some of the people who enjoyed beaches, fishing, and the town of Boca Grande. Later, Kathy Futch added many names to Deo’s painting. Homer Addison, builder and original owner of Temptation and friend of Deo and her husband George Weymouth, said when the murals were finished Deo left the paints and brushes behind and inspired him to start painting , a hobby he loved for many years.

The descendants of Du Pont continue to own homes in Boca Grande and add their support to many activities in the community.
